Party in the Woods with DJ Brown Amy at Fabulosa Fest
Every year Hard French heads up to the wilds of Marin to hang out, dance with babes, watch live bands and party in the wilderness at Fabulosa Fest, an annual summer festival celebrating women in music. Highlights for this year include a campfire jam with Kaia Wilson & Jenny Hoyston, a danceparty in A BARN with our friend Miss Pop and, for the second year in a row, our own DJ Brown Amy will be spinning her 45s lakeside on Saturday so you can tube around and shake a tailfeather on the docks or under the water. Brown Amy says her favorite Fabulosa memory was spinning Marlena Shaw’s Let’s Wade In The Water as hot ladies splashed around together in the lake which one can only imagine will be recreated again this year.
Here’s some more info about the festival from the organizers (who just happen to be our amazing El Rio family) and be sure to buy your tickets now cuz they’re going fast!
The 5th annual FABULOSA happens July 20-22, 2012 at Walker Creek Ranch, 40 miles North of San Francisco. FABULOSA attendees have a blast swimming to “Oldies at the Lake” with DJ Brown Amy (of Hard French), watching an outdoor film exhibition (by Frameline and QWOCMAP), attending workshops, getting massages, browsing the craft fair, and singing around the campfire. FABULOSA’s Main Stage and Dinner concerts feature world-class women musicians, who delightfully bring Salsa, Americana, Funk, Hip Hop, and Jazz to life.FABULOSA is an inclusive feminist gathering, open to all ages and genders. Proceeds from the 3-day party benefit women’s and LGBT charities.Camping spots, bunkhouse beds, and meal plans (with gluten-free, vegan, and omnivore options) are still available for this magical weekend on a gorgeous, green-facility ranch. Get discounted weekend passes or day passes online until July 10 at www.FABULOSAFest.com or buy regularly priced passes at the festival entrance.Tickets start at $180- 3 Days of Lodging, Meals and Festivities. HARD FRENCH HEARTS LOS HOMOS PRIDE PARTNERS
One of our favorite aspects about throwing a big ‘ole event like Hard French Hearts Los Homos Pride is the opportunity to partner with some of our favorite local businesses to make the whole thing happen! We’d like to take a minute to thank our partners and to let you know a little bit about why we love them so.
What’s not to love!? This women-centered 3 day festival happens at the prettiest ranch in Marin and features some of our favorite DJs and live performers. Our very own Brown Amy will be playing at her third Fabulosa Fest this year and will be spinning dockside so you can paddle, float or swim around the lake to your favorite soul sounds. Buy your tickets now and get ready to camp and dance your heart out July 20-22nd.
We (and by we we mean DJ Carnita) remembers first moving to San Francisco ages ago and going to Amoeba at least once a week to cruise the aisles for vinyl while also cruising the babes working behind the counter. Amoeba is still one of our favorite record stores in the world, not only because of their ridiculously expansive vinyl selection, but because their legendary in-store performances bring huge talent to the masses.
Emmy’s is one of our favorite places to go post-Hard French to soak up an afternoon’s worth of drinking at El Rio with the best Italian food in the Mission. How they make something as basic as spaghetti and meatballs an explosion of delicious in your mouth is anybody’s guess. This year they’ll be serving said meatballs in sandwich form for your eating pleasure at Hard French Hearts Los Homos.
This record store on 24th and Shotwell, specializing in new and used copies of “Rural American Music, Jazz, International Pop and Folk, and Vintage and Modern Electronics,” is extra near and dear to our hearts because it’s owned by one of our regular Hard French guest DJs, Phengren Oswald! It’s a perfect place to stop in and leave with a bag of rare records from different continents and genres you never knew existed.
This Tender-Nob cafe is the best place to meet a local queer celebrity trying to neutralize their hangover with Farm:Table’s award winning coffee and hand prepared artisan food. This queer owned cafe is also the proud owner of a brand new parklet so you can now sip your lates in the sunshine. Speaking of sipping in the sunshine, Farm:Table will be serving up their iced coffee at Hard French Hearts Los Homos for those of you who need a pick-me-up to keep you dancing late into the evening.
Have you ever wanted your logo/face/anything on a mug/tshirt/anything? Zazzle is the company that can make that happen! Zazzle well help you customize everything under the sun with your personal brand to help you get your name out there in fun and creative ways. Speaking of which, stay tuned for Hard French i-Phone cases and so much more in the future!
This is the Hard French GO TO website/online magazine/print magazine for cool shit in SF! They’ve given us a lot of love too, especially with this article. Peep their site every few days for new and interesting articles about SF Arts and Culture and not to mention Hard French is hella jealous of their kick ass new office.
Being a Zipcar member gives us the freedom of choice and do we ever choose! Our favorite car sharing service lets us put on a different set of wheels every time we leave the house. You may see a Hard Frencher scooting around town in a convertible mini cooper or working some butch realness in a Tacoma pickup. Variety is the spice of life and Zipcar keeps things spicy.
We heart this website from our one of our favorite Hard French attendees! He also happens to be the hot beardo with the football jersey and short shorts from our video series!
Are You Ready To Get Weird With SSION at Hard French Hearts Los Homos??
We’re beside ourselves excited to dance to the art-punk dance jams of Kansas City bred art collective SSION at Hard French Hearts Los Homos 2012! The Hard French crew has been obsessed with these magical queer phosphorescent beings since catching them live and then obsessively watching all of their videos on YouTube (see below) and it’s our pleasure to bring them to you.
Check out what the New York Times (BIG TIME!) had to say about ’em cuz we couldn’t have said it better:
Arguably the most wonderfully weird thing to come out of Kansas City in recent memory, Cody Critcheloe and SSION (pronounced “shun”), his band of merry eccentrics, have bounced back and forth across the country for more than a decade, releasing their own music, directing music videos for groups like the Gossip, Peaches and CSS, and making their mark at MoMA PS1, Deitch Projects and the Hole.
But don’t take the New York Times & our word for it, check out their videos yourself and don’t forget to buy yr presale tickets now because they’re going fast!
MOVIN’ with Hard French

Living Legend SUGAR PIE DESANTO Is Performing At HARD FRENCH PRIDE!
Hard French is beside ourselves excited to announce that we will be joined by one of soul music’s true living legend’s SUGAR PIE DESANTO at our Hard French ♥’s Los Homos Pride Party on Sunday, June 24th at SOMArts!

It has always been a goal of Hard French’s to have the opportunity to introduce the dance babes who come to our parties to the artists who actually created the music they’re dancing to 50 years ago and also to introduce the artists to a new generation of folks who are sweating it out to their jams! We can’t think of an artist we’d rather host than Sugar Pie, and our 2nd annual Pride Party is the perfect venue!
DeSanto, now 76 year old, recorded hits in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s that we regularly play at Hard French including Soulful Dress, I Want To Know, I Don’t Wanna Fuss, Go Go Power and a pair of songs she recorded with her childhood friend ETTA JAMES, Down In The Basement and Do I Make Myself Clear. Speaking of Sugar Pie and Etta, the only thing we like more than the songs they recorded together is the fact that in the 50’s they ran together in a San Francisco girl gang called the Lucky 20’s!! FIERCE!
To learn more about Sugar Pie check out this great NPR Article on her that takes you all the way from her SF girl gang days to her doing a backflip on stage a couple years ago while winning an award.
FYI we’re going to be announcing even more performers and be launching ticket sales soon for our June 24th Pride Party so save the date, stay tuned and in the mean time check out some of our Sugar Pie faves
